Cookbook Preview: Family Dinners by Cider Mill Press (2024)

Here’s the family dinners cookbook that came out in December 2024 from Cider Mill Press!

“Family Dinners: The Ultimate Cookbook (Quick And Easy Weeknight Meals for the Whole Family)” is by the Editors of Cider Mill Press.

Chapters include:

  • Kitchen Essentials
  • Weeknight Wonders
  • Comfort Classics
  • Hands Off
  • Around the World
  • From the Garden
  • Elevated

The book begins with some kitchen organization tips and kitchen secrets (such as folding, zesting citrus, and tempering eggs). This makes it an ideal book for a new cook (perhaps a college graduation gift, new home gift, or newlywed cookbook). There’s a long list of suggested pantry essentials, too.

The “Weeknight Wonders” chapter offers meals that come together in 30 minutes or less. Examples of recipes in this chapter are Chipotle T-Bone, Red Snapper with Tomatillo Sauce, Chicken Tacos, and BBQ Chicken Sandwiches.

The recipes in the “Comfort Classics” chapter include fish tacos; sausage, onion and pepper calzones; grilled cheese; and stuffed peppers.

The “Hands Off” chapter gives recipes that let flavors develop in a slow cooker, a pot you don’t need to tend, or in the oven. Recipes include Beef Ramen, chili con carne, and a Moroccan lentil stew.

You’ll find recipes for African Peanut & Quinoa Soup, Vegetarian Bibimbap and Empanadas in the “Around the World” chapter.

Next we visit “From the Garden” for plant-forward dishes like Peppers Stuffed with Greek Salad, an Asparagus Tart, and Panzanella.

Finally, the “Elevated” chapter offers dishes that take a bit more time to prepare, but that serve enough to have leftovers the next day. Things like Perfect Prime Rib, The Perfect Turkey, Filet Mignon with Peppercorn Cream Sauce, and Tagliatelle with Asparagus and Peas.

At the top of each recipe is a Yield, Active Time and Total Time notation.

I didn’t like the way the ingredients were listed in all caps, but at least the typography font was large and readable. Measurements were provided in Imperial style (pounds and ounces). The photographs are oddly narrow and quite disappointing from a publishing house that usually does better design and photography work. I wish there were more, and larger, photographs of the dishes.

Overall, though, this is a useful dinner cookbook that will help inspire you and get a meal on the table quickly and easily.
