Mooncakes and Milk Bread: Sweet and Savory Recipes Inspired by Chinese Bakeries
Kristina Cho
I remember the first time I had a Chinese doughnut from a friend in high school. It was mind blowing! I truthfully had no idea that the flavor and technique would be so different. Now with the Mooncakes and Milk Bread: Sweet and Savory Recipes Inspired by Chinese Bakeries cookbook we can explore all kinds of Chinese bakes.
There are sweet and savory bakes throughout this cookbook. This includes baked and steamed buns, Chinese breads, delightful cakes, and much more! I am excited to make some steamed BBQ pork buns or sweet pineapple buns with butter. I see some pancakes and marbled breads using sesame and matcha that look appetizing!
Some of the techniques and tools needed can be a little complicated. For instance, a lot of recipes utilize a steamer basket and hand mixing over using an appliance. There’s a lot of infusing flavors and pleating as well!
The Mooncakes and Milk Bread: Sweet and Savory Recipes Inspired by Chinese Bakeries cookbook showcases bakeries and cafes famous to China. This is a very niche cookbook!

3. Filo and Dough
4. Sweets, Syrups, and Confectionaries
5. Ice Creams
6. Cakes
7. Fruits
8. Creams & Puddings
9. Drinks
These do look like complicated bakes. Luckily, Salma Hage gives us a list of notable ingredients commonly used in each dish. I love that they’ve described the flavor profiles for each and where to use it!
Middle Eastern Sweets is going to be a delicious cookbook!
