Now that we’re all staying home more, cooking more for ourselves, and possibly gardening more in the spring, I thought it would be fun to work our way through Barbara M. Walker’s “The Little House Cookbook.”
Let’s explore prairie and frontier style cooking as it relates to the Little House on the Prairie series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
We’ll revisit some of our favorite food passages from the books; learn more about Laura Ingalls Wilder’s real life and peek into her kitchens virtually; examine methods for cooking over the fire; and try our hands at making several of Ma’s recipes.
Our guide will be the excellent “The Little House Cookbook” along with several Internet and video resources.
Each week we’ll read a different chapter of The Little House Cookbook. We’ll also re-read food passages from one of the Little House series of books. We’ll attempt to bake or cook a recipe or two from the cookbook and show off our efforts by posting photos in our Facebook group.
Textbook: The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Classic Stories, by Barbara M. Walker (via Amazon; affiliate link) (Harper Collins; 1979, 1989 and 2018 editions).
Also: We’ll revisit all nine of the Little House on the Prairie book to explore their food-related content.
If you want to participate with us, join our private Facebook group for discussions of frontier cooking, chats about Little House on the Prairie and sharing our efforts to cook from The Little House Cookbook!
